      Moving up

      Children born in 2016 or earlier have outgrown MiniBasket. Register them with the GABBA Academy instead, where they train in age-group squads and can play in the Cádiz Provincial League.

        The local game

        Gibraltar’s senior men’s leagues and cup competitions, played across the season by clubs from around the Rock.

        The leagues

        GBL Pragmatic Play League

        Gibraltar’s top division, played as a three-round league. There are no finals or playoffs — the league table decides it.

        Division 2

        The second division, played as a two-round league, again with no finals or playoffs.

        Cups and tournaments

        • · RBT Competition — run separately for the GBL and Division 2. Players compete only in the competition for the division they are registered in. The GBL semi-finals and final are played over two games; the Division 2 format is a knockout, to be confirmed.
        • · Shanghai Challenge — a fast, short-format competition. Matches run over two periods of up to ten minutes, and the first team to fifteen points takes the period. Because the games are short, clubs may enter extra teams so more players get court time.
        • · Lightning Tournament — teams of seven, with players registering individually and squads then balanced out. Two ten-minute halves. Entry is £5 per player, with every penny going to charity. Dates to be confirmed.
        • · Veterans Tournament (45+) — played between club teams mid-season, subject to enough interest. Format to be agreed with club representatives.

        Competitions are not listed in order, and some overlap. Fixtures and results go out on Facebook and Instagram.

          About GABBA

          Basketball in Gibraltar

          The Gibraltar Amateur Basketball Association is the governing body for the sport in Gibraltar — from a four-year-old’s first session through to national team selection.

          Who we are

          GABBA runs the pathway that takes a child from their very first bounce to competitive basketball. We deliver two programmes directly — MiniBasket for our youngest players and the GABBA Academy for competitive age groups — alongside the local club competition and Gibraltar’s national teams.

          Everything we do is built around one idea: a child should be able to start at four and still have somewhere to play at eighteen, without ever leaving the Rock to find it.

          GABBA was founded on 6 May 1964 at the John Mackintosh Hall. Basketball had reached Gibraltar with Canadian servicemen during the Second World War, but until then it had been played almost entirely inside the military gymnasiums; thirty-four teams registered in that first season, with Police taking the senior title and Blue Stars the junior one. A women’s competition followed the season after.

          The association has had several homes since — Hargraves Court, a Rotary Club plot at Landport with a full-size court and three-tier stands, and the Victoria Stadium sports hall from 1974. GABBA became a full FIBA member on 1 July 1986 and entered its first FIBA competition in Malta in December 1988. Today it is led by president John Gonçalves, who also sits on the FIBA Europe board, and is based at the Tercentenary Sports Hall on Bayside Road.

          The pathway

          Each stage is designed to feed the next. Players move up by age group, not by ability, so nobody is left behind.

          • Ages 2–4

            Baby Hoops

            Parent-and-child sessions. Movement, coordination and confidence with a ball — no scoreboards, no pressure.

          • U6 – U10

            MiniBasket

            Our introductory programme. Children join a team — Sharks, Bulls, Cobras, Gators, Wildcats or Pandas — and learn the game through weekly sessions and festival-style matches.

          • U12 – U18

            GABBA Academy

            The competitive stage. Players train in age-group squads (U12 Mini, U14 Infantil, U16 Cadet, U18 Junior), are drafted to club teams, and play a full season of local competition.

          Safeguarding

          Every person involved in basketball in Gibraltar has a legal and moral responsibility to protect young people from abuse and neglect. All individuals — players, match officials, coaches, administrators, club officials and spectators — agree to abide by this policy, and by taking part in basketball under GABBA’s jurisdiction are deemed to have accepted their responsibility to know and uphold it.

          What all GABBA affiliates commit to

          National teams, clubs, players, match officials, coaches, administrators, club officials and spectators will:

          • · Accept the moral and legal responsibility to implement procedures that provide a duty of care for young people, safeguard their wellbeing and protect them from abuse and neglect
          • · Respect and promote the rights, wishes and feelings of young people
          • · Recognise that some young people face additional barriers to getting help because of added vulnerabilities — which could include their ethnicity, gender, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, social background or culture
          • · Adopt best practice to safeguard and protect young people from abuse, and reduce the likelihood of unfounded allegations being made against themselves
          • · Accept and abide by this policy
          • · Respond appropriately to any complaint about poor practice, neglect or allegation of abuse
          The principles behind the policy
          • · GABBA is committed to ensuring that all children taking part in GABBA activities can have fun and participate in an environment that is healthy, enjoyable and keeps them safe from harm
          • · The child’s welfare — physical, mental or otherwise — is paramount
          • · The voice of the child should be heard where appropriate
          • · All young people, regardless of any protected characteristic including age, gender, ability, disability, culture, racial origin, religious belief and sexual identity, have the right to protection from abuse
          • · A child is recognised as a person under the age of 18, as defined by the Children Act 2009
          • · An adult has a moral duty of care, custody and control of any child under supervision
          • · All incidents or suspicions of poor practice, and all allegations of neglect or abuse, will be reported forthwith, taken seriously, and responded to swiftly and appropriately
          • · All young people have a right to play basketball in an enjoyable and safe environment
          • · Confidentiality will be maintained appropriately at all times, and the child’s safety and welfare must be the overriding consideration when deciding whether to share information about them
          Our duty to young players

          Everyone involved in managing young participants in Gibraltar basketball has a duty to ensure they are:

          • · Allowed access to the game in a way appropriate for their age and ability
          • · Coached and trained by appropriately qualified people
          • · Not required to play so many games, or attend so many training sessions, as to threaten their wellbeing
          • · Not subjected to verbal or racial abuse from any source, especially from the bench and the spectator gallery
          • · Not subjected to bullying, threats or undue pressure from any source
          • · Instructed on how to behave both on and off court
          • · Afforded respect and value in playing, training and any other basketball environment

          Kit

          MiniBasket

          Every registered player receives their team kit. Sizes are taken on the registration form — if your child is between sizes, size up.

          Academy

          The Academy package includes a gym sack, reversible jersey, training shorts and training t-shirt, plus playing kit once teams are drafted. Cádiz League players also receive match kit and a hoody.

          Kit is ordered once registration closes, so the size you give us on the form is the size your child gets. We’ll email you when it’s ready to collect. If anything doesn’t fit, let us know and we’ll sort it.

          What to bring

          • · Indoor trainers with non-marking soles — not the shoes they wore in from outside
          • · A full water bottle, named
          • · Their GABBA kit, or plain sports clothing before kit is issued
          • · Any inhaler or medication they may need, handed to the coach at the start

          Please leave jewellery at home. It can’t be worn during sessions and it goes missing in changing rooms.

          Code of conduct

          Players

          Turn up on time and ready. Listen to your coach and the officials. Play hard, play fair, and shake hands at the end — whatever the score. Respect teammates and opponents equally.

          Parents & carers

          Support every child on the court, not only your own. Leave the coaching to the coaches and the decisions to the officials. Remember that these are children’s games, and that the referee is often a volunteer.

          Frequently asked

          My child has never played basketball. Is that a problem?

          Not at all — most children joining MiniBasket have never played. Sessions are built for complete beginners, and children are grouped by school year rather than ability.

          Can my child try a session before we commit?

          Get in touch and we’ll arrange it where we can. Email us with your child’s age and school year and we’ll point you at the right session.

          What happens after I register?

          You’ll receive a confirmation email straight away with the amount due and a link to pay. Your child’s place is secured once payment is received. Nearer the season we’ll email their team, training day and venue.

          I have more than one child — is there a discount?

          Yes. Your second child pays half price. Register them as normal, then enter the code SIBLING where it says “Have a discount code?” before paying. Each child needs their own registration form and their own payment.

          What if we can’t afford the registration fee?

          Please speak to us in confidence before deciding not to register. We would always rather find a way for a child to play.

          My child is in Year 6. Which programme?

          The GABBA Academy. MiniBasket is for children born in 2017 and below; from there players move into age-group Academy squads.

          How do I let you know my child will miss a session?

          Tell your child’s coach directly — they’ll let you know the best way to reach them at the start of the season. It genuinely helps: coaches plan sessions around who is expected.
